Set Jetting: Exploring the Magic of On-Screen Destinations

Set Jet Lord of the Rings movie film tour in New Zealand

Lights, camera, action! Have you ever dreamed of stepping into the enchanting world of your favorite movies or TV shows? If so, set jetting might just be the perfect travel trend for you. In this blog post, I’ll dig into what set jetting is and how it can affect your vacation experience.

Set jetting has been around for decades; however, with the increase in set jet travel, it’s now becoming more widely known and studied. If you haven’t heard of set jetting, it’s someone who visits a particular destination because they want to visit a location where a movie or TV show was filmed. Think Jurassic Park and Hawaii, Lord of the Rings and New Zealand, or Emily in Paris and well, Paris.

This trend is growing so quickly that now destinations are reaching out to film producers to entice them to film at their locations versus the other way around. A couple decades ago, film producers were known for putting destinations on the map because of a certain movie or TV show.

Why such a boom in set jetting?

While there are many reasons, one big one, we can once again thank – COVID. With people staying home and the increase in streaming capabilities, TV shows and movies are accessible to more people globally and watched repeatedly. Naturally people have a desire to visit these beautiful places they are looking at.

How will this affect your vacation?

If you’re traveling to a popular location known for set jetting and it’s their busy season, you can expect to pay more for the experience than you used to. Many hotels around the globe have doubled in price due to increased demand brought on by set jetting.

Knowing this, if you’re not going to a destination because of a movie or TV show, consider visiting when it’s their “off season.” There will likely be less crowds, more availability and better pricing for you.

I often encourage clients who have flexible dates to consider visiting during a destinations off season (if it’s a year-round destination). If that’s not an option for you, be prepared to pay a premium and you may not get everything you want; especially if it’s a last-minute booking. For instance, many travel companies (accommodations and tour operators) are completely booked for the remainder of this year. You’ve heard me say this many times - for the best of everything (availability and pricing) make your reservations as far out as possible.

Set jetting opens a doorway to a whole new dimension of travel. By venturing into the realms of your favorite movies and TV shows, you can embark on a captivating journey that merges fantasy with reality. The experience of set jetting adds a magical touch to your vacations, allowing you to explore iconic locations, connect with beloved stories, and create memories that will last a lifetime. So, grab your camera, pack your sense of adventure, and get ready to immerse yourself in the captivating world of set jetting. Lights, camera, vacation!

I would love to hear from you. Let me know in the comments, what’s your favorite set jet vacation experience, or where would you love to visit?
