Are You REAL ID Ready?
While standing in the TSA line at the airport, I heard an agent tell a traveler that his driver’s license wasn’t a REAL ID. That perked my interest, and I started listening. Sure enough, many people in line were being told the same thing.
With the REAL ID requirements starting May 7, 2025, I thought it would be helpful to send a little reminder to double-check your driver’s license.
If you plan to use your state-issued ID or driver’s license as your identification when you fly within the U.S., it will need to be REAL ID compliant, or you won’t be allowed through TSA airport security checkpoints.
Not sure if your ID is compliant with the new requirements?
It’s best to check with your state’s DMV. If your driver’s license is expiring within the next year, it’s easy to upgrade to the REAL ID when you renew your license.
What about children?
TSA doesn’t require those under 18 years old to provide identification when traveling with a companion who has a REAL ID. For children traveling alone, an adult should escort them to the Travel Document Checker and provide proper identification.

I get it. No one looks forward to a trip to the DMV. BUT, it’s better than being turned away at the airport and missing out on your vacation.
