Apps for Helping Travelers with Accessibility Needs
Traveling and exploring new places can be hard enough without a disability. As you know I’m not disabled, so I really can’t speak to the daily challenges one may face. I can however share and pass along some useful tools I have been given - specifically apps.
There are many apps I could mention, but today I’m going to focus on 4 that may help someone with a disability while traveling. In reality these apps can be used by anyone and for everyday life, but their main purpose was to help those with a disability.
Flush - Toilet Finder & Map
Starting with finding toilets. I know I’m not alone when I say one of the things that can drive me crazy about traveling is the lack of public restrooms. This app has over 200,000 bathrooms in its database!
If I have issues finding a toilet, I can only imagine what someone who is disabled goes through. This app usually lists which toilets have disabled access, which can be extremely helpful for someone in a wheelchair. The map will help you navigate to public toilets near you.
Be My Eyes
As the name suggests, this one was designed for those who may be blind or have difficulty seeing. It was designed for daily, around-the-house use, but it can also be used when traveling. Maybe someone needs help reading a menu or picking out their clothes. It can also help with reading vending machines & kiosks.
The way this app works is the user is connected to a human volunteer on the other end. The phone’s camera is enabled and the person on the other end tells the disabled person what they are seeing – brilliant! It’s free to use and available globally 24/7.
Rodgervoice
Bet you guessed it – this one is for those who need help hearing. This app has been designed for phone calls. It will turn someone’s voice into text on the user’s screen – in real time. It’s currently available in over 80 languages!
The downside of this one is the person the user is calling also needs to have the app. If they don’t, the user must have a subscription to cover the cost of the calls. Even so I feel this app is amazing in allowing those who need assistance hearing get the help they need.
Pill Reminder
When on vacation it can be easy to lose track of time and therefore miss taking medications. Shoot, it can be difficult to remember to take medications in everyday life. This app not only helps with handy reminders, but also notifies the user when it’s time to refill a prescription and many other things.
