Mexico’s New Restrictions on Electronic Devices

For all us bleisure travelers out there—those who combine business and leisure travel—Mexico has recently implemented new restrictions on the electronic devices and other personal items you can bring into the country. Whether you're jetting off with a laptop for work or packing a tablet for your next vacation, it’s important to stay informed to avoid unexpected fees at customs. 

What’s Allowed Without Import Fees? 

Mexico now limits the number of certain electronic devices that can be brought into the country tax-free (among other things). According to the latest regulations, ONE portable computing device, such as a laptop, tablet, or iPad, is permitted per traveler without incurring any import fees. 

However, if you're traveling with multiple laptops or tablets, be aware that any additional devices may be subject to an import fee. 

Other Electronic Device Limits 

The restrictions don’t stop at laptops and tablets. Mexico has also placed limitations on other commonly carried electronics, including: 

• Up to 3 cell phones

• 2 cameras

• 1 pair of binoculars 

• 1 dedicated GPS device 

• Up to 4 fishing poles

Potential Fees and Taxes 

If you exceed these limitations, you may be subject to customs duties, which typically start at 19% of the items’ value. In some cases, travelers have reported customs fees exceeding the original value of their items, so it’s crucial to stay within the allowed limits to avoid any surprises.
